Should NASCAR retire the "3" ?

Saturday, 06 February 2010 20:09 Patrick McNamara

earnhardt-3It seems like it was only yesterday, the image is so strongly recorded in my mind, the No. 4 of Sterling Marlin and the No. 3 of Dale Earnhardt getting together and the Intimidator's Chevy ending up against the wall in what looked like another relatively innocent "plate race incident".

But this one turned out to be anything but innocent and every race fan knows how the story ended.

Every year since, at some point and time during Speedweeks you'll hear someone say "they should retire the No. 3".

This year isn't any different, as Jim McCoy from Bump-Drafts.com writes :

He’s been gone almost nine years to the day, but his memory is still as alive as when he was haulin’ the mail to seven Cup titles. The emotions- pro and con- regarding Ralph Dale Earnhardt are just as fresh today, as they were when he walked among us.

Wisely, Richard Childress- the owner of Earnhardt’s ride- pulled the number from the car immediately following the driver’s death at the 2001 Daytona 500. When young Kevin Harvick climbed into the cockpit next week, he did so in a car bearing the #29. They also reversed the paint scheme, so Harvick was driving a predominantly white car. It was a wise gesture of respect, and it quickly put from people’s minds any comparisons between anyone in that car and the memory of a giant among greats.

You can read the rest of his blog post : http://bump-drafts.com/2010/02/04/retire-the-3-a-good-question/

Personally, I'm against retiring the number.  It is just not a practice I want to see started.  If they retire the No. 3, then logically, they should retire the No. 43.  I mean come on, Petty is the King.  And the path just gets slippery and steeper from there.

Dale Earnhardt was more then just the No. 3.  Heck, it wasn't even his only number.  It wasn't his first number.  He won a championship in another number.  Earnhardt was more then just the No. 3

The man is going into the Hall of Fame.  His memory will live forever in NASCAR lore.

Leave the number alone.

My thoughts on MADHOUSE

I sat down and got to thinking about what I thought about MADHOUSE.. and then I found this post on the Hartford Courant Website by Gene Haddock .. and it is was it :

Finally, somebody makes a racing/reality show that knows something about racing. Anyone who has ever been to a local short track more than once, has seen everyone of these characters.

*The old, dirty driver who people love to hate.
*The sons of a fan favorite, who have a ready made fan base.
*The arrogant upstart.
*The old independent, racing on a shoe string budget.

Unlike most 'reality' shows, "Madhouse" didn't have to manufacture these characters. They're already there, and they are very realistic. After viewing one show, I'll go so far as to proclaim this the best racing project of all time... TV or movie. Fiction, or non-fiction.

Gene Nailed It.

Haven't written an publisher's desk update in awhile.

We have a lot of really cool stuff which will be breaking in a few days, hope everyone stays tuned because we are excited to make the announcement and I think you all will be happy with the new changes and the direction we are going.

michigan_platesI saw an interesting photo this morning.  It is a montage of Michigan license plates from over the past 100 years or so.  I thought it was pretty cool and I wanted to share.  If you click on the photo, you can see it full size.

Hope everyone had a great holiday season and the new year is treating you right.

Who loses 2011 NASCAR Date ?

Wednesday, 30 December 2009 06:44 Patrick McNamara

Kentucky SpeedwayI was reading my Sports Business Journal this morning and was pondering the consequences of the NASCAR/Kentucky Speedway lawsuit and settlement.  If you’ve been following the story the past several years, Kentucky Speedway’s founders filed an antitrust suit in 2005 against NASCAR and International Speedway Corp., which they lost.

Without question, that means Kentucky Speedway will likely land a Sprint Cup race for 2011, which means one of two things...  they add a date to the schedule or they move a race from its current venue.

Speedway Motorsports Inc. purchased the track from Kentucky Speedway's founders and SMI Chairman Bruton Smith announced his desire to move one of his company’s existing Sprint Cup race dates to Kentucky Speedway, but had to wait for the speedway’s antitrust suit to play out in the U.S. Court of Appeals.

The court announced Dec. 11 it had denied that appeal, opening the door for Smith to move a date. Which SMI track will yield a race date to Kentucky? Atlanta Motor Speedway seems to be the most likely source, but that decision won’t be announced until later next year.

So fans in Georgia...  how do you feel about losing your race ?  Atlanta sports fans are generally considered among the worst in professional sports, but the Atlanta track produces some great racing.  Better I suspect then we'll get out of another cookie cutter mile and a half.

You win it in the corners...

David vs GoliathI found this youtube video the other day and all I could think of was one of the first things Dennis O'Neil ever thought me about short track racing...

"You win it in the corners"

Straight away speed is cool...  and the fans certainly love to see a big block howl down the straight aways.   But is there anything more impressive then watching a good handling car just chop a lead in the corners ?

Here is a dirt track battle between a 358 cubic inch Sportsman Dirt Mod and a 600cc Micro Sprint...

Yes..  you read that right..  Motor City Muscle vs a pumped up lawn mower..

Wanna guess how this goes ??
